Children & Families

CGS Good Shepherd“Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray.  The disciples rebuked the people; but Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:13-14).

The family is the FIRST PLACE that all of us are called to learn & live the Good News of Jesus Christ! We all need to be better disciples, no matter our age.

That’s why our families engage in faith formation TOGETHER…parents AND children.

Because children learn their faith best from their parents & because parents learn by sharing with their children, we have initiated our Family Faith Formation process!

Family Faith Formation (FFF)

Beginning in September 2020, the families of our parish are invited to join in a new initiative where the WHOLE FAMILY will learn & grow as disciples of Jesus! Whole-family catechesis is becoming very popular around the country because it reminds parents that they are the FIRST & BEST EDUCATORS of their children in the Catholic faith; and it gives them a way to be successful in that role.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Our youngest parishioners (pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, & both years of First Holy Communion Prep) engage in hands-on learning activities with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which is a Montessori-based style of catechesis.  It is a fantastic method to foster the spiritual growth of children & parents! Come see our atrium when it re-opens (after the COVID pandemic)! You’ll fall in love!

Sacramental Preparation

Part of our mission in Family Faith Formation is to prepare children & teens for the Sacraments of the Eucharist & Confirmation.

Preparation for First Holy Eucharist will take place within the FFF format (at home, too), by the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, & with our Family Retreat (which happens after Easter each year). Check out our webpage for First Holy Communion preparation.

Preparation for Confirmation will happen within the FFF format (at home, too), & with two Confirmation retreats developed by the pastoral staff. Check out our webpage for Confirmation preparation.

If your child needs to be prepared for First Eucharist or Confirmation, please contact Marisol Aguirre (se habla Español) at 731.668.2596 or marisol.aguirre@stmarys.tn.org.

Vacation Bible School

Each year during June, we also host a great Vacation Bible School experience for children ages 3 through 5th grade (rising 6th grade). During this week, we offer resources to the parents so that they can continue helping their children GROW IN FAITH after the VBS week.

Other Retreats & Events

In September 2016, we hosted our first Faith & Family event: a concert performed by John Angotti, at Jackson’s downtown ampitheater. The second event we hosted, in January 2017, was a day-long retreat for families, including teaching & a family holy hour!
