Sponsor Requirements

Baptism & Confirmation

One sponsor, male or female, is sufficient, but there may be two, one of each sex. The Church says it is “desirable” that the sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation be the same person.

The sponsor’s function is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfils the duties inherent in this sacrament.

Each sponsor must fulfill the following requirements:

• Be 16+ years old
• Be confirmed
• Have received First Holy Communion
• Not bound by any canonical penalty
• Not be the parent of the child
• Lives a life of faith:
  • Is a practicing Catholic (i.e. they faithfully attend Sunday Mass, go to Confession, etc.)
  • If married, is in a marriage recognized by the Church (i.e. cannot be cohabitating). Note: The sponsors do not necessarily have to be married to each other, but if either sponsor is married or living as though married, that sponsor must be in a marriage recognized by the Church.

First Holy Communion

We do have sponsors for First Holy Communion Mass in Spanish, but there are no canonical requirements for sponsors for First Holy Communion. They are not necessary, we do not record them, and there is no official form to fill out or process that must be followed. It’s a ceremonial honor, and has no official requirements like the list above.

However, any sponsor should be a model to the child of what it looks like to live a life of faith, so it is fitting for a sponsor for First Holy Communion to be someone who does fulfill the above requirements.

Bautismo y Confirmación

Basta con un padrino o madrina, aunque pueden ser dos (uno de cada sexo). La Iglesia considera “deseable” que la misma persona sea padrino/madrina de Bautismo y Confirmación.

Función del padrino/madrina: velar porque la persona confirmada sea un verdadero testigo de Cristo y cumpla fielmente los deberes inherentes a este sacramento.

Cada padrino/madrina debe cumplir los siguientes requisitos:

• Tener 16 años o más.  
• Estar confirmado(a).  
• Haber recibido la Primera Comunión.  
• No estar sujeto(a) a ninguna pena canónica.  
• No ser padre ni madre del niño(a).  
• Llevar una vida de fe, es decir:
  • Ser católico practicante (asiste fielmente a Misa dominical, acude a Confesión, etc.).  
  • Si está casado(a), estar en un matrimonio reconocido por la Iglesia (no vivir en unión libre).  Nota: los padrinos no tienen que estar necesariamente casados entre sí; pero si alguno está casado o vive como casado, ese padrino/madrina debe estar en un matrimonio reconocido por la Iglesia.

Primera Comunión

En las Misas de Primera Comunión en español sí se pueden tener padrinos, pero no existen requisitos canónicos para ellos. Los padrinos para Primera Comunión no son necesarios, no se registran oficialmente y no hay formulario ni trámite canónico obligatorio. Es un honor ceremonial sin las exigencias formales mencionadas arriba.

No obstante, es apropiado que el padrino/madrina sea un ejemplo de vida de fe; por ello, es conveniente que cumpla los requisitos señalados en la sección anterior.
